Position Description:

POSITION SUMMARY

This faculty position is a full-time, 100% FTE Temporary, One Year, Categorical, Non-tenured (11 Months, August - June) as Counselor, Umoja/ AFFIRM the Division of Student Servies located at Evergreen Valley College.

Assignment may include day and evening responsibilities. Some workdays may be assigned outside the eleven-month academic calendar.

This position is represented by the San Jose/Evergreen Federation of Teachers, AFT 6157.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provide academic, vocational, career, personal and guidance counseling for new, continuing and prospective AFFIRM students. Work with students to develop abbreviated and comprehensive educational plans to meet the Student Support and Success Program ( SSSP ) mandates and Student Equity (SE) objectives regarding student performance and retention.

2. Provide walk-in counseling and work with program specialist on Early Alert efforts.

3. Coordinate counseling components such as probation/dismissal, orientation, outreach, on-line counseling, on-line orientation, student cohorts, etc. for meeting SSSP mandates.

4. Participate in outreach functions that may include serving as a liaison with high schools, mentors, community-based organizations and four-year colleges/universities.

5. Refer students as appropriate to campus and community resources and services.

6. Collaborate with AFFIRM instructors and the program specialist to develop, implement and evaluate outreach and retention strategies.

7. Visit AFFIRM classes and attend AFFIRM Program campus and community activities. Assume general counseling responsibilities as assigned.

8. Participate in the implementation of the District-wide Student Success Plan including admissions, multiple measures, and orientations, counseling and follow up components.

9. Participate in student learning outcomes ( SLO ) of guidance courses, Service Area Outcomes and Assessment activities.

10. Teach courses in assigned discipline by communicating subject matter clearly and effectively.

11. Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.

12. Demonstrate commitment to professional development, including but not limited to activities such as: participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, membership in professional organizations, research projects, publishing academic work, participation in statewide committees or organizations, etc.

13. Demonstrate sensitivity in working with students and staff of diverse racial, ethnic, academic and socio economic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and disabilities by showing respect for differences and the dignity of others.

14. Participate in faculty responsibilities such as: course and curriculum development and review, student learning outcomes and assessment, program review, committees, research and special projects as needed in the discipline/department or district.

15. Attend and participate in department, division and college meetings and keep posted office hours.

16. Meet record keeping obligations on time, e.g. grades, census, reports, rosters, textbook orders, and requisitions.


17. Maintain and provide current course syllabi as required by California Education Code and Board policy.

18. Foster a professional work and learning environment.

19. Perform other duties as required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.


Required Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

1. Masters degree in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, Career Development, Marriage and Family Therapy, or Marriage, Family and Child Counseling

OR

*The Equivalent (Note: A Bachelors degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist ( MFT ) is an alternative qualification for this discipline, pursuant to title 5, section 53410.1.)


Desired Qualifications:

1. Knowledge of African-American culture with emphasis on the African-American community.

2. Experience working with African-American organizations in the community.

3. Knowledge and skills in retention strategies for African-American students. Experience as a member of a non-traditional academic program for African- American student

Salary Range:
$110,451 to $151,619 Entry Level Annual Salary (Academic Salary Schedule 2026-2027); Maximum Salary Potential $196,722. Note: Actual Salary placement is based on candidate's verified education and experience.
